Laxmikant Pyarelal - Their Music was a Key to Success of a Film or a Career of an Actor

 


Music directors Laxmikant-Pyarelal have composed many of such popular songs which have benefited the films to become hits as well as the film actors/actresses' popularity hiked. Dosti (1964) film was a hit because of its songs.

Bindiya Chamke Gi’  from “Do Raaste” in 1969 gave name and fame as well as ‘star’ status to Mumtaz. Similarly, Sridevi became a star after ‘Hawa Hawai’ from “Mr India” in 1987. In this blog, I am discussing a few of such songs that have boosted the career of many actors.

Their first film Parasmani (1963) was successful because of its music.
 Classic songs like "Woh Jab Yaad Aaye", "Mere Dil mein halki si", "Hansta hua", "Roshan Tumhi se" attracted the people to cinema halls to a B grade movie with no star cast.

Dosti was amongst the top ten highest-grossing films of 1964, declared a "Super Hit" at the box office, with no star cast This was the music of the film which made the film hit. Laxmikant Pyarelal got their first Best Music Director

Raja Aur Runk (1968) was a film starring Sanjeev Kumar and Kumkum with no star value was one such film that became a hit because of their music.  The hit team of Anand Bakshi and Laxmikant Pyarelal created melodious songs like 'Tu Kitni Achchi Hai...O Maa', 'O Phirkiwali', 'Mera Naam Hai Chameli' and 'Sang Basanti Ang Basanti'.

 Laxmi Chhaya is known for the songs like ‘Mar Diya Jaye Ke Chhod Diya Jaye’   ‘Hi Sharmau Kis Kis Ko Batau’  and ‘Aaya Aaya Atariaya Pe Koi Chor’ all from “Mera Gaon Mera Desh” 1971,

In the success of Bobby(1973) its music played a great role, This was a RK film but its music was super hit and Shailendra Singh, the singer became popular because of them.

Madhuri Dixit became a star from the song Ek Do Teen from Tejab 1988. With this song, Alka Yagnik also became the Top Female playback singer.

Story Behind the Song 'Jhooth Bole kauwa Kate'

 


This popular song of the 1973 film Bobby was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Shailendra Singh. This was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. The song was in fact based on Bundelkhand folk song ' Mein Mayke Chali Jaongi'. These lines were suggested by Vithal Bhai Patel, the great Hindi poet to Raj Kapoor.

Raj Kapoor added Mukhra( 'Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kate') to these lines which he heard from Rajendra Kumar 8 years back in 1962 during the shooting of Sangam.

There was an incident at the time of the shooting of Sangam in Paris. After the shooting of previous day Raj Kapoor told Raj Kapoor that in the next day they will start shooting early so he takes care that he wakes him up early. 

The next day Rajendra Kumar got up and was ready for shooting, finds Raj Kapoor still sleeping, he went to his room and knocked Raj Kapoor's door. Raj Kapoor was annoyed by being disturbed. Rajendra Kumar on this said that he himself had asked him to get up in the time which Raj Kapoor said you are lying. Rajendra Kumar at that instance saw 2 crows sitting on the balcony of the room and suddenly said Jhooth Bolun to Kauwa Kate, Raj Kapoor remembered those words and used these words as Mukhra of the song. 

Vithalbhai Patel was credited for this song in this film but Anand Baxi who completed the song was not happy that he did not get credit for the song. In the film immediately the song finishes another song starts. This song was also written by Vithalbhai Patel.'Na Chahon Sona Chandi'

Laxmikant- One Half of the Legendry Composer Duo LP

 


LP was the most sought after composer duo in the seventies and eighties. In two decades, they composed music for 250 films. They had 45 golden and silver jubilees to their credit. Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar was born on 3rd Nov 1937 in a modest family. At a very young age, he learned the mandolin. He spent two years in the company of the well-known mandolin player Hussain Ali. 

Laxmikant met Pyarelal at a recording and soon became friends. Laxmikant was older than Pyare by three years. When Laxmikant was about 10 years old, he once played mandolin in a Lata Mangeshkar concert in Radio Club, Colaba. Lata was so impressed that she talked to him after the concert. Later, when Lata came to know of their financial hardships, she recommended them to S D Burman, Naushad and C Ramchandra. Both of them worked as instrumentist.

In the early 1960s, they joined Kalyanji Anandji and began arranging music for their films Madari, Satta Bazar, Chhaliya, Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and Himalaya ki God Mein. They got their first break as an independent composer in a Bhojpuri film but this film couldn't be completed/. After that, they were signed for a B grade Hindi film 'Parasmani' released in 1963. The music of this film became so popular that Rajshri Films offered them a film 'Dosti' which was released in 1964. The film and its music became superhit. They got their first Filmfare Award as Best Music Director for this film.

Then came Lootera (1965), a superhit musical non-star cast film, which is remembered only because of Lata Mangeshkar's superhit songs with Laxmikant–Pyarelal. The very next year the music of Aaye Din Bahar Ke (1966) followed by Pyar Kiye Jaa. Even in films with lesser-known actors, L-P scored hit music: in Sati Savitri (Songs:"Tum Gagan Ke Chandram Ho", "Jeevan Dor Tumhi Sang Bandhi", "Kabhi To Miloge"); in Sant Gyaneshwar (Songs: "Jyot Se Jyot Jagate Chalo", "Khabar More Na Line"); in Hum Sab Ustaad Hai (Songs: "Pyar Batate Chalo", "Ajanabi Tum Jane Pehachane Se"); in Mr X in Bombay (Songs: "Mere Mehboob Quayamat Hogi", "Chali Re Chali Re Gori", "Khoobsurat Haseena"); and in Shriman Fantush..(Songs: "Sultana Sultana Tu Na Ghabarana", "Yeh Dard Bhara Afasana").consolidated their position.

1967 proved to be another lucky year for them. The Music of Milan, Farz, Shagird and Pathar Ke Sanam was very popular. They got their 2nd Filmfare Award for Milan. Laxmikant–Pyarelal has now become the most sought after Music Director Almost all the big banners were signing them They composed Indian classical music as well as Western music; they were most popular for their folk tunes and semi-classical music.

LP had divided their work, to avoid ego problems. Laxmikant used to compose tunes, rehearse singers and look after the commercial aspects – while Pyarelal used to arrange the music and package and record the songs. They both had a perfect wavelength. It is said if they are asked to make a tune for a song sitting separately they will make a similar tune.

In the mid-'90s Laxmikant's health started deteriorating; he finally succumbed to a kidney ailment on May 25, 1998. Pyarelal was left alone and stopped making films, despite many offers from producers.

Laxmikant Pyarelal- Dominance in Binaca Geetmala

 


Binaca Geetmala was the first and the most popular countdown show of Hindi Film songs from 1953 to 1993. The program played a plethora of popular songs, flooding the airwaves of our childhood and youth. We used to wait eagerly to every Wednesday at 8 PM, to tune in to what would be a nonstop one hour feast of music fiesta.

In an interview, Laxmikant told that it was their desire that their song is played in this program. It became their goal to achieve this feat. In the third quarter of 1963, Laxmikant-Pyarelal first ever songs Hasta Hua Noorani Chehra form “Parasmani”  hit the “Binaca Geetmala”.  It appeared on the Number 06 position in the finals. Number  15  also acquired by Woh Jab Yaad Aaye, from the same film.

Binaca Geetmala was a weekly program and in the last Wednesday of the year, Binaca Geetmala used to broadcast annual (Varshik) program giving the orders of the top ‘Final Songs”  songs of the year, at the end of every year. The success of a music director , lyricist or singer was judged on the performance of their song in the annual program.

If we look into the 40 years journey of this show, the total number of songs that appeared were 1259. Out of these, 245 songs were composed of them, highest of all music directors followed by Shankar Jaikishan (144 songs). 

The popularity of their songs was so high that on many occasions, more than half the numbers of the songs were of the duos.  There are certain weekly Binaca Geetmala programs in which more than 13 out of 16 songs of Laxmikant-Pyarelal were broadcast when the duo were on right on top of their carrier. 

After appearing for the first time in 1963 they dominated this program.. Not only that, on an average, there used to be at least more than 8 to 10  songs from the desk of the duos, that too covering about 50 % of the songs in between top to first ten positions.

In their 30 years journey in Binaca Geetmala, their composition topped for Eleven years including four times in a row in  1967, 1968, 1969, and 1970. In this blog, I am posting these Top Songs (11)

50 Years of Humjoli




Recall the badminton song "Dhal Gaya Din " which was later recreated in a song of 2007 film"Om Shanti Om"  Another song Haye Re Haye Neend Nahin Aye and Tik Tik Tik performed by Jeetendra and Mumtaz made this movie a musical hit in 1970.
The highlight of the film was the unforgettable comedy of Mehmood, who played a triple role of grandfather, father, and son mimicking Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor, and Randhir Kapoor.
The film was produced by Prasan Kapoor under the Tirupati Pictures banner and directed by T. R. Ramanna. It stars JeetendraLeena Chandavarkar in the lead roles with Pran and Mehmood, and music composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal

Village-based Gopalnath (Pran) had always dreamed of becoming rich. On a visit to Bombay city, his dreams are fulfilled when he agrees to marry plain-looking Roopa, the sole heiress of a wealthy man (Nazir Hussain). Unknown to Roopa, Gopalnath loves fellow-villager, Shyama (Shashikala). After the passing away of Roopa's dad, Roopa gives birth to a baby girl, Ranibala. Gopalnath arranges to have Roopa killed; marries Shyama, and lets Ranibala lives in a hostel. Years later, his past comes to haunt him in the shape and form of Shyama's relatives, and Ranibala's suitor, Manmohan, who will not leave any stone unturned to blackmail Gopalnath for the rest of his life.

Great performances from everyone as well as excellent songs and picturization make Humjoli an entertaining watch. Mumtaz appears for the catchy song 'Tik Tik' where Mumtaz and Jeetendra's dancing makes Leena shed tears of jealously.

Laxmikant of Laxmikant Pyarelal - A Musical Prodigy



 Laxmikant(3rd Nov 1937- May 25, 1998)  spent his childhood amidst dire poverty in the slums of Vile Parle (East) in Mumbai. He lost his father very early in his life.
His father’s friend, a musician himself, advised Laxmikant to learn music. Accordingly, Laxmikant learned to play the mandolin from the well-known mandolin player Hussain Ali and later from Bal Mukund Indorker and violin from Husnalal (of the Husanlal Bhagatram fame). When he was only 10 years old, he played mandolin in a Lata Mangeshkar concert in Radio Club, Colaba. Lata was so impressed that she talked to him after the concert and asked him to join  Sureel Kala Kendra, a music academy for children, run by the Mangeshkar family. Here he met the young Pyarelal, who was 3years younger to him. They used to spend long hours at the recording studios, sometimes getting work for each other and even playing together whenever they got the opportunity.
Lata Mangeshkar saw talent in him and Pyarelal, helped them to fight poverty by recommending them as a musician to the music directors of that time like Shankar Jaikishan,, OP Nayyar, etc.
In 1953, they became assistants to Kalyanji-Anandji and worked with them as assistants till 1963. They worked as music arrangers for many music directors including Sachin Dev Burman (in Ziddi) and also for his son Rahul Dev Burman (in his first film Chhote Nawab). Laxmikant–Pyarelal and R D Burman remained very good friends, even when Laxmikant–Pyarelal started giving music independently. R D Burman played mouth organ for all songs of Dosti. Laxmikant once made a guest appearance playing the role of himself as a Composer of Song “Dil Ki Baat” in Teri Kasam (1982), which had music by R D Burman.
Laxmikant was a diehard fan of Shankar Jaikishan, in fact In their early days, Laxmikant–Pyarelal's music was very similar to Shankar-Jaikishan's music,  Laxmikant–Pyarelal's first film as music director was not released. The first released movie which featured them as music directors was Babubhai Mistry's Parasmani (1963), all the songs of the film became immensely popular, esp. "Hasata Hua Nurani Chehara", "Wo Jab Yaad Aaye".In the third quarter of 1963, LP’s first-ever songs Hasta Hua Nurani Chehara form Parasmani hit the “Binaca Geet Mala”.
Laxmikant–Pyarelal hit the big time with Rajshri Productions' 1964 film Dosti. The film had two newcomer heroes who never became popular, and the film was a success due to its music. They won their first Filmfare Best Music Director Award for this movie, ahead of stalwarts like Shankar-Jaikishan (for Sangam) and Madan Mohan (for Woh Kaun Thi?). Then came Lootera, a superhit musical non-star cast film, which is remembered only because of Lata Mangeshkar's superhit songs with Laxmikant–Pyarelal.
In 1966 L-P consolidated its place in Hindi film music. L-P's first musical hit film, with a big star cast, Aaye Din Bahar Ke was released, followed by Pyar Kiye Jaa.In the same year few more of their films released such as Sant Gyaneshwar (Songs: "Jyot Se Jyot Jagate Chalo",); in Hum Sab Ustaad Hai (Songs: "Pyar Batate Chalo", "Ajanabi Tum Jane Pehachane Se"); in Mr. X in Bombay (Songs: "Mere Mehboob Quayamat Hogi", "Chali Re Chali Re Gori", "Khoobsurat Haseena"); and in Shriman Fantush..(Songs: "Sultana Sultana Tu Na Ghabarana", "Yeh Dard Bhara Afasana"). 
In 1967 LP received their second Filmfare Trophy for Milan without any stiff competition. That year this Jodi gave a series of hits, one after another. Non-star cast film Farz was L-P's first golden jubilee musical hit, followed by big star cast films such as AnitaShagird, yet another Golden Jubilee hit, Patthar Ke Sanam,
They dominated the music industry along with R D Burman in the 70s and 80s.theycomposed over 3000 songs, or even more, in nearly 500 films. After Milan, they won 5 more Filmfare awards. for Best Music Director.
Their music in Bobby has been rated the 17th best soundtrack ever by Planet Bollywood on their "100 Greatest Bollywood Soundtracks". Other soundtracks in the list include Amar Akbar Anthony (25), Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (27), Dosti (32), Hero (36), Ek Duuje Ke Liye (44), Karz (50), Ram Lakhan (59), Kranti (61), Tezaab (65), Do Raaste (74), Milan (75), Khalnayak (77) and Prem Rog (85).
Laxmikant died on May 25, 1998, Pyarelal went to self retirement.
